Digital Twin – Revolutionising the Deployment of IoT Software
22 March 2021
According to IOT Analytics “In 2020, for the first time, there are more IoT connections than there are non-IoT connections. By 2025, it is expected that there will be more than 30 billion IoT connections, almost 4 IoT devices per person on average.”
We are on the way to the IoT transformation – it is becoming a reality and embedded into our systems, but this is a marathon, not a sprint, we have still got a long way to go. IoT will continue to have a great impact on the economy by transforming businesses digitally and hence opening up new efficiency and acting as a catalyst for business models, but is it enough?
The good news is that businesses and homeowners the world over are embracing IoT devices but the revolutionization of the devices, what makes them real and useful, is the data that they deliver and in turn the software that takes the vast amounts of data sets and turns them into actionable insights to enable people and businesses to make decisions for economic or environmental gain.
The power of IoT lies in the data collected and the software tools that take a variety of data sets and delivers actionable insights to facilitate new business models, improve efficiency and increase stakeholder engagement. What most software systems do is deliver this data in report format, graphs, gauges and alert lists. Revolutionising software and bringing datasets to life is the ability to create a virtual replica of the building, system or process that you are collecting data on. To be able to map and see a virtual visual of the item(s), building(s), activities you are monitoring and managing with your IoT deployed devices. This is where the Digital Twin is revolutionising the IoT market space.
At CODA we do have an insight into the future of a building and its assets with our digital twin technology. Quite literally, a digital twin is a digital duplicate of a building or estate represented visually. It means building operators and facilities managers can physically see what is happening in real-time via sensor data feeding into cloud-based software.
Our digital twin technology is embedded within the CODA cloud software platform, it creates a digital replica of a physical asset such as a machine, piece of equipment, device or even an entire building or estate. The ability to pair the physical world with the digital world allows analysis of data and monitoring of systems to head off problems before they occur and ultimately puts the power in the hands of building owners and operators.
A picture paints a thousand words and that’s how the digital twin technology helps
Consider a commercial office building or a railway station for example. Being able to virtually ‘walk-through’ the site room by room, floor by floor and see ‘virtually’ the real-time and historic activities that are taking place in each room on each floor. See occupancy and internal air quality (IAQ) levels in that room, know which room is flagging an alert. See the HVAC panels and individual air conditioning units in each room and know exactly which one is running, in fault, calling for maintenance. Know exactly where your mains meter supplies are located.
Digital twin software solutions are revolutionising the way we manage and monitor our commercial real-estate, the assets within them, they are living models of a future we can choose to accept or avoid. We can visualise occupancy management for COVID-secure social distancing as well as internal air quality control. All through the use of a picture. CODAs digital twin does all of this and more.
